Effect of buctril super (Bromoxynil) herbicide on soil microbial biomass and bacterial population BABT
Abbas,Zafar; Akmal,Muhammad; Khan,Khalid Saifullah; Fayyaz-ul-Hassan,.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of bromoxynil herbicide on soil microorganisms, with the hypothesis that this herbicide caused suppression in microbial activity and biomass by exerting toxic effect on them. Nine sites of Punjab province (Pakistan) those had been exposed to bromoxynil herbicide for about last ten years designated as soil 'A' were surveyed in 2011 and samples were collected and analyzed for Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Biomass Nitrogen (MBN), Biomass Phosphorus (MBP) and bacterial population. Simultaneously, soil samples from the same areas those were not exposed to herbicide designated as soil 'B' were taken. At all the sites MBC, MBN and MBP ranged from 131 to 457, 1.22 to 13.1 and 0.59 to 3.70 µg g-1 in the contaminated...

Effect of Brachionus rubens on the growth characteristics of various species of microalgae Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Abou,Reda A.I; Singh,Manjinder; Rivera-Cruz,Anangelica; Power,Grace; Bagby-Moon,Thomas; Das,Keshav.
Background: Cultivation of algae for conversion to biofuels has gained global interest. Outdoor raceway cultivation is preferred because of its lower capital and operating costs. A major disadvantage of outdoor cultivation is susceptibility of algal crops to attack by predatory rotifers. In order to quantify the impact of rotifer attack on different species of algae, we evaluated the growth of eleven microalgal species over a 21-d period after being infected by the predatory rotifer Brachionus rubens. Results: Of the eleven species, Chlorella sorokiniana was the most susceptible with rapid decline in algal growth concomitant with increase in rotifer population growth (3.82/d). In contrast, Synechococcus elongatus andScenedesmus dimorphus were both...

Seagrass biomass and their role as carbon reservoirs in the localities of San Andrés Island and La Guajira, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Acosta-Chaparro,Andrés; Sánchez-Valencia,Laura; Gómez-López,Diana Isabel; Gónzalez-Corredor,Juan David; Navas-Camacho,Raúl.
ABSTRACT Seagrass meadows have stood out for being very effective fixing atmospheric carbon, among others, due to their ability to produce plant biomass. Therefore, the values of shoot density (m2), biomass (cores) and carbon present in 12 locations with Thalassia testudinum at the Colombian Caribbean (La Guajira and San Andrés Island) were quantified. The biological samples were processed in laboratory until obtaining the values of aerial, underground and total dry weight, and the estimation of the carbon was stablishing from a ratio of 35 % of the dry biomass. Statistical tests were carried out to determine significant differences between the sites, highlighting the aerial biomass in La Guajira and the underground biomass in San Andrés. It was calculated...

Estimating the bioenergy potential of Pinus radiata plantations in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Acuña,Eduardo; Espinosa,Miguel; Cancino,Jorge; Rubilar,Rafael; Muñoz,Fernando.
The bioenergy potential for electricity and ethanol production of Pinus radiata D. Don plantations in Chile was modeled, on a regional basis, using radiata pine plantations areas by age class. Wood basic density equations based on age and growing region, wood moisture content variability, and the effciency of a hypothetical power plant were used to estimate the amount of electricity produced by biomass at harvesting age including logging residues. Bioethanol yield was estimated at 275 L t-1 of dry biomass. The uncertainty of the bioenergy production were analyzed using probabilistic distribution functions and an estimate of 1.83 million ha-1 of radiata pine plantations by year 2030. Parameters considered for the uncertainty analyses included the rotation...

Ciclagem de carbono em ecossistemas terrestres: o caso do cerrado brasileiro. Infoteca-e
ADUAN, R. E.; VILELA, M. de F.; KLINK, C. A..
ABSTRACT: In the Cerrado Biome, the internal carbon cycling, the main carbon pools size, and the fluxes intensity between carbon pools are far from to be completely understood. This study presents the main carbon pools and cycling fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems, emphasizing the neotropical savannas. This study will also review literature of internal carbon cycling in the Cerrado. In spite of the science advances, the knowledge of internal carbon dynamics in the Cerrado are scarce. The relation between the carbon pools size and fluxes intensity and the Cerrado's vegetation phytofisionomies, soil gradient, and climate still remains unknown. The carbon pools and fluxes data analysis show that the Cerrado's aerial carbon pools are smaller than the forest...

Greater Mitochondrial Energy Production Provides Resistance to Ocean Acidification in “Winning” Hermatypic Corals ArchiMer
Agostini, Sylvain; Houlbrèque, Fanny; Biscéré, Tom; Harvey, Ben P.; Heitzman, Joshua M.; Takimoto, Risa; Yamazaki, Wataru; Milazzo, Marco; Rodolfo-metalpa, Riccardo.
Coral communities around the world are projected to be negatively affected by ocean acidification. Not all coral species will respond in the same manner to rising CO2 levels. Evidence from naturally acidified areas such as CO2 seeps have shown that although a few species are resistant to elevated CO2, most lack sufficient resistance resulting in their decline. This has led to the simple grouping of coral species into “winners” and “losers,” but the physiological traits supporting this ecological assessment are yet to be fully understood. Here using CO2 seeps, in two biogeographically distinct regions, we investigated whether physiological traits related to energy production [mitochondrial electron transport systems (ETSAs) activities] and biomass (protein...

Producer Willingness to Supply Biomass: the Effects of Price and Producer Characteristics AgEcon
Altman, Ira J.; Bergtold, Jason S.; Sanders, Dwight R.; Johnson, Thomas G..
This paper presents research results based on data from two biomass producer surveys collected from mid Missouri and southern Illinois. Specific topics of interest include the effect of price and producer characteristics on willingness to supply, assets producers currently own and services they may be willing to provide if bioenergy industries develop. A series of censored tobit regressions are utilized to analyze willingness to supply results under three price scenarios. Marginal effects of a one dollar change in the biomass price are shown to increase the willingness to supply by 0.5 to 2 percent.

A variação...
